The Fashion Do's and Don'ts of Do Revenge
Netflix’s
Do Revenge premiered last month with a slew of familiar faces from the Netflix scene. But the real stars of the show were definitely the costumes. Embracing a sickly-sweet bubblegum palette, the fashion was a not-so-subtle nod to the themes of performativity, and false personalities hidden under a guise of friendship and goodwill.
Playing on the dark storylines of cult classics like
Cruel Intentions and
Heathers, this film explores the worst parts of being a teenager and being hated by other teenagers. It’s sadistic for the sake of it. Fun.
And while there’s a lot to learn from that storyline alone, there is also a lot to learn from the fashion hits and misses that were on display.
A few unsolved mysteries in this film:
1. Where are the parents?!?!
2. Why is Sophie Turner in it?
3. How does our main character, Drea, afford all these clothes if one of the main plot points is that her mum works nights to afford her private school education? And DO NOT tell me that she gets all her clothes from Salvos like the first five minutes tried to make me believe. Or that she is a master seamstress when all she could manage was a somewhat frumpy “dress” for a lizard (who was really in no need of a dress).
Let’s just appreciate the ridiculous tilt of this beret
Can you imagine a school uniform this cool? Pastel purple with green plaid (or sometimes pastel green with purple plaid), matching ties and a capelet over the top. With what must be a very loose uniform policy, students add personal touches to their uniform with
shoes and
socks in all kinds of colourful mesh patterns, and eye-catching jewellery.
The boy’s uniform is comprised of beige coloured pants with a short sleeve white shirt and whatever shoes they fancy. Not too shabby.
This hat cannot be respected
This hat, sunnies, earrings, and kaftan combo is giving grandmother-that-has-to-be-reminded-to-cover-up-around-the-grandkids-does-Saint-Tropez vibes. Good for her. I’m not saying it’s not cool in its own way, but you can’t fool me into thinking this was the outfit that got Eleanor in with the cool kids. I would have been torn to shreds for wearing this in high school. And what function would this hat serve apart from magnifying the sun directly onto your face? Five minutes in this head-prison and the condensation would become too intense. Here are some different options that will actually make you look cool and chic.
Making a matching set look bougee
Drea Torres played by Camilla Mendes, loves a matching set. I mean, don’t we all? A monochrome set with a bandeau underneath really sets off those summer vibes and is perfect for the warmer months. Or pairing a resort-style
crop top with high-waisted
shorts can also infuse your outfit with a luxe-poolside look, with minimal effort. Big yes to this look.
Adopt graphic tees as your religion
He may have the personality of a celery stick, but this guy knows how to dress. While Russ’ style is the most understated of the characters, understated can go a long way. Drea drags his t-shirt here for some reason, but it stands to mention that they did end up dating. Why? Beats me. And why is he British? Also beats me. God save the king (lord knows he’s gonna need it).
This motorcycle and leather jacket combo was corny as hell. Russ is not the bad boy character but now he wants to go for a “joy ride”? Someone humble this man.
Tennis camp outfits
A lot of plot points come together at tennis camp where all the cool girls from school hang out. In fact, this one time at tennis camp, Sophie Turner made perhaps the most questionable performance of her career. Her character could easily have been removed with zero impact on the film’s plotline. But anyway. Clothes. The girls at tennis camp wear a preppy uniform of colourful crop tops and polo shirts with tennis
skirts. With plenty opportunity for sun visors and sleek, low-profile sneakers there’s an excuse for you to try out tennis court style this summer.
Cringey dialogue aside, the fashion in
Do Revenge was nothing if not bold, powerful and extravagantly styled. Shop
