Redefining the Art of Layering

Winter Layering

Redefining the Art of Layering

At Glue Store, we are redefining the art of layering this winter with pieces that will be on rotation all season long. Learn what’s trending from apparel to footwear, how to wear it and how to get the most usage out of it.

This winter at Glue, we are turning up the heat on the rule of three.

The rule of three is the basic formula for ensuring your outfit has adequate layers to not only stay warm this winter, but to keep cool if the day warms up. The rule stipulates that you need three layers; your base layer should fit close to the body to keep heat in, your middle layer should provide insulation and your outer or shell layer should provide weather protection such as wind or rain proofing.

What this rule fails to account for is the variability between individual style. Glue’s Winter collection showcases how to layer with a difference. Layering can look different for everyone depending on your preferred style. Wearing prints and textures on your base layer can create interest and depth, while layering with a basic bottom layer – like a plain long sleeve can create a simpler look. It’s all up to the individual.

This is the rule of three, personalised.

Button-up shirts are the ideal mid layer as they can be worn open or closed, with a Carhartt bomber jacket layered over the top. Pick neutral or matching colours to create a look that matches black pants and a pair of sneakers. Cropped women’s The North Face Nuptse jackets allow pants and skirts to take on a more central role in the outfit, making detailing and pocketing visible during winter as well.

Outerwear vests by The North Face or Carhartt can be worn sized down or oversized depending on your preferred middle layers. If you prefer an oversized, relaxed look, opt for a larger sized vest so that you can layer a slouchy hoodie by Stussy or Nike underneath it, or size down for a slimmer middle layer such as a turtleneck.

Longline coats let you do more with what you’ve got on underneath, allowing space to experiment with knits, shirts, and fashion tops. Opt for something with a high neck to keep the heat in or pare it back with a T-shirt if it’s looking to be a warm day.

Try wearing a bold jacket with an oversized plaid shirt underneath and wide-leg pants to create statements at every juncture in your outfit. This is a great layering method for those who like to play with proportions or own mostly statement pieces and haven’t got room for those pesky basics in their life.

Don’t forget to call on accessories and footwear to spice up your fit! In the winter months, most of the details of our wardrobe can be hidden beneath layers. A trending crossbody bag, strong pair of boots or sneakers, sunglasses or headwear can re-inject personality into a look.
